These are the terms for using Makan Lah! (formerly Jalan Jalan Cari Makan PG; “we”, “us”) — a free Penang food discovery site run by Edwin Ooi. By using the site, or by creating an account, you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

How we handle your personal information is set out separately in our Privacy Policy, which forms part of these terms.

1. What Makan Lah! is

Makan Lah! helps you find places to eat in Penang. We are a directory and a search tool. We do not own, run, cater, deliver for, or endorse any of the restaurants, stalls or cafes listed, and we are not a party to anything that happens between you and them. If a meal, a bill or a booking goes wrong, that is between you and the business.

2. Restaurant information may be wrong or out of date

Please read this one properly, because it matters more here than any other clause. Penang food businesses change constantly: stalls take unannounced days off, opening hours shift, prices go up, menus change, places move, and places close for good. Our listings are compiled from public sources, from restaurant owners, and from what users tell us, and they will sometimes be wrong.

The site, and every piece of restaurant information on it, is provided “as is” and “as available”, with no warranty that it is accurate, complete or current. Opening hours, closures, prices, menus, halal or dietary information, contact details and locations are indications only. Check with the business before you travel, and never rely on Makan Lah! alone for dietary, allergy or religious requirements.

3. Your account

  • You need to give a real, working email address, and keep your password to yourself.
  • You are responsible for what happens under your account. Tell us if you think someone else is using it.
  • One person, one account. Accounts created to farm points or draw entries are not allowed.
  • You can ask us to close your account at any time — see the Privacy Policy for how.

4. What you submit: suggestions, feedback and reviews

You keep ownership of anything you write and send us. By submitting it, you give us a free, worldwide, non-exclusive licence to use, store, edit, translate, shorten and publish it on Makan Lah! and in our own promotional posts, for as long as we run the site. That is what lets us turn your tip into a listing, quote it, or fix a detail based on what you told us.

When you submit something, you are telling us it is your own, it is honest, and it does not infringe anyone else's rights. We are not obliged to publish or act on any submission, and we can edit or remove anything without notice. Submissions may be published without your name unless you have asked otherwise.

5. Acceptable use

Please do not:

  • post anything false, defamatory, threatening, hateful, obscene, or intended to harass a business or a person;
  • post fake reviews or fake reports, whether to promote a business or to damage a competitor;
  • scrape, bulk-download, copy or republish the directory, or use it to build a competing database;
  • attack the site or try to get around its security, rate limits, or admin-only areas;
  • game the points or draw mechanics — multiple accounts, automated check-ins, fake check-ins at places you did not visit, or sharing check-in codes;
  • use the site for anything unlawful under Malaysian law.

6. Points, tiers and lucky draws

Makan Lah! has a rewards layer: you get points for signing up and for checking in at restaurants, points build up towards membership tiers, and points can be used to enter lucky draws.

  • Points have no cash value. They are not money, credit or property, they cannot be bought, sold or transferred, and they cannot be exchanged for cash.
  • The amounts, the earning rules, the tier thresholds and their perks, and the draws themselves are all subject to change, suspension or withdrawal at any time, including changes to points already earned. This is a young feature and we expect to keep adjusting it.
  • Each draw may have its own entry cost, entry limit, opening and closing time, number of winners and prize. Those are shown with the draw and apply on top of these terms.
  • Winners are picked from valid entries after the draw closes, and we will contact winners using the details on their account. Prizes cannot be exchanged for cash unless we say so.
  • We may cancel entries, remove points, or disqualify an account where we reasonably believe the rules were being gamed.
  • If we ever shut down the rewards features or the site, unused points simply lapse, with no compensation.

7. Our content

The Makan Lah! name, design, code and the compiled directory are ours or our licensors'. You are welcome to use the site normally, link to it, and share individual listings. Anything beyond that — copying the database, reusing the design, or commercial reuse — needs our permission first. Restaurant names, logos and photos belong to their respective owners.

8. Availability and changes

Makan Lah! is free, and provided on a best-effort basis. We may change, suspend, or stop any part of it, add or remove features, or take the site down for maintenance, without notice and without owing you anything. We do not promise it will be available, uninterrupted or error-free.

9. Suspension and termination

We may suspend or close your account, remove your submissions, or block your access if you break these terms, if we reasonably suspect fraud or abuse of the points and draw system, or if we are required to by law. Where it is fair and practical to do so, we will tell you why. You can stop using Makan Lah! and ask us to close your account whenever you like.

10. Limits of our liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, Makan Lah! and its operator are not liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or for lost profits, lost data, wasted time or wasted journeys, arising out of your use of the site. That specifically includes turning up at a place that had closed, changed its hours, or changed its prices, and anything about the food, service, hygiene or safety at a business we list.

Where liability cannot be excluded, our total liability to you for any claim connected with the site is limited to RM100. Nothing in these terms excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that Malaysian law does not permit us to exclude — including your statutory rights as a consumer, which these terms do not affect.

11. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the site develops. The “last updated” date at the top will change, and for anything material we will say so on the site. Continuing to use Makan Lah! after a change means you accept the updated terms.

12. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Malaysia, and the courts of Malaysia have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising from them or from your use of Makan Lah! If any part of these terms turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still applies.
